Bolivia`s tax office SIN launched on Wednesday a new data center with an investment of US.65mn, SIN president Rafael Vargas confirmed to BNamericas.
The new center will control and verify 12 million receipts a day, compared to 4.5 million a day under the old system, he said.
The investment included US0,000 to upgrade infrastructure and security mechanisms and the investment in new equipment, most of it from Hewlett-Packard, was US.55mn, Vargas said.
With the new facilities, SIN is now able to cross-reference data with receipts going back five years, to have better control of such public documents.
Besides, the office will also be able to provide services more quickly, offering more taxpayers the possibility to use the internet to pay their contributions. "Right now we only receive online tax declarations from large taxpayers, but with these new facilities, medium-sized taxpayers will also be able to use this system," he added.
The new system also allows workers earning over 7,000 bolivianos (US3) to declare their contributions online. Through this system, companies download the software and distribute it to those employees earning more than this figure. Later, the company sends the completed information to SIN by email.
This data center is the culmination of an IT upgrade project that SIN started in 2002 and which considered investments of US.5mn-2mn a year. According to Vargas, the tax office expects to maintain this rate of investments over the next few years.
"We are working on a new billing project and about to launch another related to control at points of sale, which are the most important projects in the short term. We are also working on a three-year project to restructure IT processes and systems, which is expected to start mid-2006," he said.
