Tom Conrad, Chief Technology Officer for Pandora explained, ``We have been experiencing a significant increase in the amount of new listeners to our service -- as well as an increase in overall listening hours. Using Level 3 to scale our network, we are confident that any future growth can be accommodated. Level 3 will help us to ensure that our listeners will enjoy fast, uninterrupted service.``
Pandora is an online radio service designed to help users discover and listen to music that is tailored to the tastes of the consumer. Created by the Music Genome Project, an ongoing effort to analyze hundreds of thousands of songs across a series of distinct musical attributes, Pandora asks the listener to enter the names of favorite songs or artists into Pandora. The service then quickly scans the comprehensive collection and launches a personalized streaming station for the user, containing songs with interesting musical similarities. Listeners further hone their stations by offering feedback on the selections.
Brady Rafuse, President of Level 3 Content Markets explained, ``Pandora is one of the most exciting new applications on the Internet today, and we are excited to be a part of their growth trajectory. The Level 3 network was built for this type of bandwidth-intensive application and is ideally suited to scale rapidly to meet Pandora`s ever increasing bandwidth requirements.``
According to the company, eight of the top-10 Internet destinations utilize Level 3`s network solutions. With one of the world`s largest IP backbones, Level 3 provides reliable high capacity solutions to meet the rapidly growing demand for rich media content online. With Internet connectivity in 82 key markets, and a comprehensive suite of network services that serve as customizable building blocks, with scalability, performance, and comprehensive service portfolio.
Pandora launched in Fall 2005. Pandora`s online radio service is based on the Music Genome Project, which began in 2000. Each song in the collection, which covers Pop, Rock, Jazz, Electronica, Hip Hop, Country, Blues, R and B, and Latin, is analyzed by a trained musician along 400 distinct musical attributes (such as melody, harmony, rhythm) to capture its unique musical identity. Pandora creates a tailored stream of songs that share key musical characteristics -- launching a personalized listening experience, full of new discovery across the genome. Listeners can create up to 100 of these online radio stations, refine them by providing feedback and can email them as the user directs.

IFL Opens Third UK Colocation Facility The facility is located on the 1st floor of the IFL2 site at Manchester Technopark; is an addition to IFL`s two existing Manchester colocation facilities.

IFL, a provider of colocation and datacenter services, today announced that they have opened their data center in Manchester, North West region of the United Kingdom.
The facility is located on the 1st floor of the IFL2 site at Manchester Technopark and is an addition to IFL`s two existing Manchester colocation facilities. IFL2 is a facility, with n+1 UPS systems and diesel generators protecting the two floors of the building operated by IFL. Further protection is offered through VESDA smoke detection and FM200 fire suppressant, non-ozone depleting n+1 air conditioning and 24x7x365 technical support and manned security.
The facility offers solutions for single and multiple racks in a secure open rack area or dedicated suites. As IFL remain carrier neutral in all three facilities, bandwidth is available from a number of providers with redundant connectivity between all locations.
"IFL`s expansion is great news for the region as it further enhances Manchester`s growing strength in the industry. We are delighted to say that much of the expansion will cater for the success of our existing customer base. Many of these customers are Manchester based and demonstrate demand in the region through their sustained need for quality datacenter space from IFL. Although high, demand for IFL services is not limited to the region as Manchester is increasingly viewed as an alternative to the major facilities in London, or an additional location for added geographical resilience," said Matthew Edgley, IFL Sales Manager.
